Janie’s life changing baked goods is now open at 212 West 80th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues. The store is part of a remarkable story. Owner Janie Deegan was homeless and drug addict in her mid-twenties before she changed her life and started her bakery business. “I grew up on the Upper West Side and now live here, so it felt like coming home,” she told Gothamist. “On Thursday evening I had a couple of people helping set up and training the staff, and after everyone left at around 11 p.m. I put on some music and thought, ‘This is my oven, I paid for it.’ and ‘This is’ my mop, that I mop the floor.’ It’s far from being a homeless junkie.
