Hush Puppies’ Good Shoes have stopped 112,000 plastic bottles ending up in Australian landfill
With its Good Shoe collection, Hush Puppies Australia has saved 112,500 plastic bottles from ending up in the landfill.
The collection, which was launched in 2020, has made 22,500 pairs of shoes from the recycled plastic Flyknit in Australia alone.
Worldwide, the Good Shoe program has saved 612,500 plastic bottles from landfill.
Speaking of the collection, Hush Puppies GM Charlene Perera told Ragtrader that the brand is excited about the performance of recycled materials.
“We made sure that our sourcing team was very much involved in the process of finding ethically sourced, sustainable materials that we could rely on to deliver excellent quality.
“The materials were then performance tested by independent laboratories to ensure this quality and durability.
“It is very exciting to see these new recycled or eco-friendly materials work as well or even better than materials that we have traditionally used,” she said.
However, the sustainable practices are not only reflected in the brand’s Good Shoe range.
In the current spring-summer collection 2021, 29% of the range contain an environmentally friendly, recycled heel grip instead of conventional synthetic material.
And by 2022, Hush Puppies wants to have at least one piece in every shoe recycled or environmentally friendly.
As the deadline looms, Perera said the process had been going on for a long time.
“We did a lot of research to find out which sustainable material options are already on the market and how they are used in various industries.
“We also did a lot of research on the material supply chain to ensure that the materials we selected were sourced ethically and are authentic.
“And as soon as we found a material or element of a shoe in The Good Shoe collection that was well received by our customers, we rolled it out to our entire range.
“We also invested a lot of time in the design process because we wanted the Good Shoes to be relevant, but also classic pieces that didn’t lose their appeal.
“This is not about fast fashion!
“The whole process from research to delivery took about 12 months,” she said.
Additionally, the company has been working to eliminate virgin plastic in all shoe boxes and is on track to make its online mailers and supply chain 100% virgin plastic free by 2022.
In addition, around 50% of Hush Puppies models are made from leather certified by the Leather Working Group.
Hush Puppies Australia’s sustainability mission is supported by its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, which ensures that the company operates as ethically and responsibly as possible.
“We have established three pillars (Worker Wellbeing, Environment Impact Management and Responsible Sourcing) that determine our strategy,” said Perera.
“We are working on better traceability, more ethical sourcing, the use of better materials and being the employer of choice from our employees all the way to our factories.
“We want to make sure that we are completely transparent in our entire business. And transparency also means honesty.
“We were completely honest with ourselves, the process and our strategy.
“We know we are not perfect, but we are determined to improve with time and persistence.
“Our strategy is a journey and we want to make sure our consumers are with us on that journey,” she said.
